Go back in time in Palmyra 3D

Go back in time in 3D immersion around the castle of Palmyra. Results obtained from 260 images extracted from an archive video recorded in 2009.

3D visualization of Palmyra Castle

Fakhr-al-Din al-Maani castle (or Palmyra castle) is a castle located in the province of Homs, Syria. Built by the Mamluks in the 13th century on a high hill overlooking the historic site of the city (which was one of the most important cultural centers of the ancient world), it was appointed by the Druzes: Emir Fakhr-al-Din II. Emir who had extended the area of the Druzes in this region during the 16th century.

Registered on the UNESCO world heritage in 1980, the castle is now threatened since the group “Islamic state” (Daesh) seized the city of Palmyra on 21 May and after have devastated much of cultural properties (in Irak and elsewhere). In this context, 3D modeling of the Palmyra castle for the benefit of Unesco (a technique that has become essential for the documentation and dissemination of information) now makes it possible to visualize and archive temporal data for the preservation of architectural heritage.
